Collect Required Physical Data

Throughout the revaluation, listers, also known as data collectors, will be sent to properties which have sold, some going back one or two years, depending upon the property type. Notification will be sent to the properties that will be inspected. Included will be a Sale Verification questionnaire, which the property owner will be asked to fill out and either give to the lister or mail directly to the Assessor’s Office. These recent sales will be used as the basis for valuing the properties for the 2010 revaluation.

The listers will ask to physically inspect the interior and exterior of each building. They will note changes to the buildings, their location, size, age, and quality of construction, number of bedrooms and bathrooms, topography, utilities, zoning restrictions, if any, and numerous other characteristics both inside and out.

The lister may also inquire about the terms of the sale to verify the sale is a true market transaction. If the property is income producing, (apartment, office building, etc.) the lister may inquire about rental information. In order to obtain verification that a property was inspected, the owner is asked to sign the data collection form to verify that the inspection took place. The entire process typically takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes. If you are unsure about letting a person in, listers will be carrying proper identification and will have their information on file at the police department and the assessors’ office.
